PODLASIE
Primeval forests, bison, and multiculturalism.
Białowieża, Biebrza, Narew, Wigry. Four national parks, Orthodox churches, and the largest wetlands in Europe.
Four National Parks in One Region
Podlasie is the greenest region in Poland. Białowieża — the last primeval lowland forest in Europe and home to European bison. Biebrza — the largest wetlands in Central Europe. Narew — a river that flows in a hundred channels. Wigry — glacial lakes amid forests.
Slow travel here means slowly stepping into wild nature. Birdwatching, listening to moose in the water, walks along wooden boardwalks over peat bogs.
The Multicultural East
Podlasie is a region where Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Tatars, and Jews lived side by side for centuries. Churches in Supraśl and Grabarka, mosques in Bohoniki and Kruszyniany, synagogues in Tykocin — all traces of that multiculturalism.
Podlasie cuisine combines Slavic and Tatar traditions: kibiny pastries, kartacze potato dumplings, potato babka. All hearty and simple, as befits an agricultural region.
