Podlasie — A Weekend with Bison and Orthodox Churches
A weekend plan for the wildest region of Poland. Białowieża, Biebrza, Supraśl — three days in a land of forests and multiculturalism.
Podlasie is the wildest and most culturally diverse region of Poland. In one weekend you can see bison in the primeval forest, marshes full of birds, and Orthodox monasteries in the middle of a forest.
Day 1 — Białowieża
Start with a visit to Białowieża National Park. The strict reserve with a guide, the Bison Breeding Centre, a walk along the Bison Trail. In the evening — dinner in one of the local taverns, where you can try Podlasie cuisine: potato babka, kartacze, and pickled cucumbers.
Day 2 — Biebrza
In the morning, drive to Biebrza National Park. The Długa Luka boardwalk, the observation tower in Goniądz, a walk through the marshes. In spring and autumn this is a paradise for birdwatchers — cranes, moose, birds of prey. In the evening — accommodation at an agritourism farm near Goniądz.
Day 3 — Supraśl and Tykocin
The last day is a journey through the multicultural heritage of Podlasie. Supraśl — the Orthodox monastery and icon museum. Tykocin — a Baroque town with a synagogue and castle. It is also worth visiting Kruszyniany — a Tatar village with the oldest mosque in Poland.
Practical Tips
A car is almost essential — public transport in Podlasie is limited. Accommodation is best booked in advance, especially in season. Bring binoculars, comfortable shoes, and a rain jacket — the weather can be changeable.
