Połonina Caryńska — one day that lasts a year
A short climb, a long ridge and a view that stays in your head. Połonina Caryńska is one of those Bieszczady places where you do not have to go far to see everything.
The Bieszczady have a few iconic places and Połonina Caryńska is one of them. It is a grassy ridge — “połonina” means a mountain meadow — from which you see Połonina Wetlińska, valleys and ranges all the way to the horizon.
What the route looks like
The most common approach starts from Brzegi Górne or near Ustrzyki Górne. The climb is short but steep — about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on pace and conditions.
On the ridge you walk long and gently, with views on both sides. It is a route where you take more photos than steps.
Weather changes everything
The meadow is exposed — no forest for shade, no shelter when a storm arrives. Wind can be strong even on a sunny day, and fog can come in minutes.
So: a rain jacket in the pack, water and a hat. In the Bieszczady weather changes faster than in the Tatras, because the ridges are wide open.
When to go
The best months are June–September, and September is exceptional: grasses change colour, fewer people, softer light. July and August are peak season — the ridge gets busy.
In winter the meadow demands kit and experience: it is avalanche terrain and very exposed.
What not to do
Do not leave the trail — this is national park land and the grass is fragile. Do not camp outside designated places. Do not assume there is signal everywhere.
Practical
Bases: Ustrzyki Górne, Wetlina or Brzegi Górne. Buses reach Ustrzyki from Sanok or Krosno — a car is easier, but in season car parks fill up early.
More: Połonina Caryńska.
Why go
Because it is one of the few places in Poland where the effort is short and the reward is disproportionately large. One day is enough to understand why people return to the Bieszczady every year.
