Fanciful sandstone formations and scenic routes that delight hikers of all ages. Slow travel through the Table Mountains — Poland's only plate mountains.

Why the Table Mountains, differently

The Table Mountains are the only plate mountains in Poland — where instead of sharp peaks there are vast plateaus and fanciful rock formations. They were formed from sandstone deposited on the seabed over 100 million years ago, then uplifted and shaped by erosion. This is a landscape that looks like a sculpture — and indeed, many rock formations have their own names, shapes and legends.

Slow travel through the Table Mountains is a celebration of details: the texture of sandstone, the scent of damp forest, the silence in the depths of rock corridors. Instead of rushing through all attractions in one day, choose two or three routes and give them full attention. These are mountains that reward the patient — the longer you look at the rocks, the more details you notice. They are also one of the best Polish mountains for families with children — routes are short but full of adventure.

What to see

The Table Mountains split into several parts: Szczeliniec Wielki (highest peak), Błędne Skały (labyrinth), Skalne Grzyby (Rock Mushrooms), Wambierzyce (sanctuary), Kudowa-Zdrój (spa). Two to three days are best to visit.

Szczeliniec Wielki

  • Szczeliniec Wielki (919 m) — the highest peak of the Table Mountains, reached by over 600 steps. From the summit, a panorama opens over the Sudetes, the Kłodzko Valley and surrounding towns. The ascent takes ~1 hour, the route is demanding but rewards with views.
  • Route around Szczeliniec — after reaching the summit, walk the route around the top (~1.5 km), leading through narrow crevices, rock corridors and viewpoints. The route is safe (railings) but requires attention.
  • Wolf and Grandfather's Armchair — characteristic rock formations on the route around Szczeliniec. Worth stopping at them and looking closely.

Błędne Skały

  • Błędne Skały — a labyrinth of crevices, corridors and rock chambers where you can get lost for hours. Rock formations have various shapes — from mushrooms and towers to figures and animals. Walk the entire route, stopping at the most interesting formations.
  • Route through the labyrinth — the route is ~1 km, but takes at least an hour. Narrow crevices (some 30 cm wide) require fitness and good physical condition.
  • Rock formations — the most famous are the Hen's Foot, Stool, Kitchen, Sofa and others. Bring a map or guidebook to recognize the formations.

Skalne Grzyby and other attractions

  • Skalne Grzyby — a group of rock formations resembling mushrooms, in the southern part of the Table Mountains. Less known than Błędne Skały, but equally interesting.
  • Wambierzyce — a Marian sanctuary, called Jerusalem of Silesia. Baroque church with a moving nativity scene and a Calvary with numerous chapels. Worth it for architecture and atmosphere.
  • Kudowa-Zdrój — a spa at the foot of the Table Mountains, with a Spa Park, mineral water pump room and numerous guesthouses. A good base for trips.
  • Skull Chapel in Czermna — a unique chapel where the walls and ceiling are made of human bones. A difficult but worth-seeing place.
  • Broumovské stěny — rock formations on the Czech side, less known than Polish ones, but equally beautiful.

When to go

  • April and May — the best time. Fewer crowds, long days, stable weather. Worth a walk through Błędne Skały.
  • September and October — second best. Autumn colours, clear air, fewer tourists. September is a good time for Szczeliniec.
  • July and August — peak season. Szczeliniec and Błędne Skały crowded, queues at ticket offices. If you must — pick a weekday and come in the morning.
  • November–March — the Table Mountains in winter are wild and quiet, but trails require proper equipment. For experienced hikers.

Getting there

  • By car: ~1.5 hours from Wrocław (A4 and route 8), ~2 hours from Prague, ~5 hours from Warsaw.
  • By train: station in Kudowa-Zdrój, with connections from Wrocław (~2 hours), Prague (~3 hours). Then bus or taxi to trailheads.
  • By bus: PKS and private operators from Wrocław and Kudowa-Zdrój.

Public transport in the Table Mountains is sparse — a car makes moving between attractions (Szczeliniec, Błędne Skały, Wambierzyce) much easier.

How much time you need

A weekend (2 days) is the minimum — one day for Szczeliniec, one for Błędne Skały and Kudowa-Zdrój.

Three days is realistic for a first visit. Szczeliniec, Błędne Skały, Skalne Grzyby, Wambierzyce, Kudowa-Zdrój.

A week lets you explore the entire Table Mountains — Polish and Czech sides, Wambierzyce, Skull Chapel and surroundings (Kłodzko, Duszniki-Zdrój).

What to eat and where to sleep

  • Duck with apples — a Lower Silesian classic, available in restaurants in Kudowa-Zdrój and Wambierzyce.
  • Silesian dumplings — round potato dumplings with a hole, served with sauce and meat.
  • Grilled trout — from local farms, available in restaurants in the region.
  • Kwaśnica — cabbage soup with meat, a regional classic. Available at every tavern.
  • Beer from local breweries — several craft breweries in the Sudetes (Browar Wielka Sowa, Browar Złoty Pies).
  • Mineral waters — Kudowa-Zdrój has several mineral water pump rooms. Worth trying local waters.

Accommodation: Kudowa-Zdrój (largest choice, spa), Polanica-Zdrój (quieter, cheaper), Duszniki-Zdrój (spa with traditions), Karłów (close to Szczeliniec), Wambierzyce (close to the sanctuary), agritourism farms in surrounding villages. Book ahead in season.

Practical tips

  • Bookings — tickets for Błędne Skały and Szczeliniec are worth buying online in season (pngs.com.pl). In July and August queues at ticket offices are long.
  • Combined tickets — a combined ticket for Szczeliniec and Błędne Skały is cheaper than separate tickets.
  • Weather — the Table Mountains are low, but the weather changes quickly. Even in July, bring a rain jacket.
  • Shoes — sturdy trekking boots are essential, especially in Błędne Skały, where the route leads through narrow crevices. Comfortable sports shoes are enough for short walks.
  • Błędne Skały — the route is one-way (no turning back). Walk in a group, especially with children. Narrow crevices can be difficult for people with claustrophobia.
  • Car parks — paid car parks at Szczeliniec and Błędne Skały. In season they fill by 9 a.m.
  • Signal — good in Kudowa-Zdrój and Wambierzyce, weaker on trails.
