Poland by train — 7 routes for a car-free weekend

Seven routes, one rule: no car. Each of these cities has a station close to the centre and a realistic travel time from at least one big city. Below: times for the fastest connections from Warsaw, Kraków and Gdańsk, plus a short plan for a two-day trip.

Times at a glance

Times are the fastest rail connections on a typical weekday, fetched from an open routing API in October 2026. Always check the timetable before travelling — and remember that a station near the centre saves more time than a faster connection to an out-of-town station.

Gdańsk — 2:25 from Warsaw

A city for two days that leaves you with a list for next time. The Motława, Oliwa and a beach on the other side — all within tram range.

Kraków — 2:40 from Warsaw

The Main Square, Kazimierz and a mound — classics that work in winter too. From Warsaw 2:40, so a day trip is realistic.

  • MOCAK Contemporary Art or National Museum
  • Vistula riverbank boulevards

Wrocław — 3:55 from Warsaw

A hundred bridges, islands and Ostrów Tumski with its gas lamps. A city that does not need a plan.

  • Ostrów Tumski at dawn
  • Oder River islands
  • Evening in Nadodrze district

Poznań — 2:35 from Warsaw

The Old Market in the morning, St Martin croissants and Ostrów Tumski. Good for a weekend without big declarations.

  • Dinner in artistic Jeżyce

Hel — 4:35 from Warsaw

A spit, a seal sanctuary and the sea on both sides. The train runs to the end of the peninsula, so no car is needed.

  • Cycling from Władysławowo to Hel
  • Historic Hel Lighthouse
  • Puck Bay at sunset

Zakopane — 5:00 from Warsaw

The Tatras without a car: the station is close to the centre, then a bus or your own legs. From Kraków 2:10.

  • Kościeliska Valley trail
  • Evening with smoked highland cheese and mountain views

How to choose

  • One day off? Toruń, Kraków or Poznań from Warsaw; Kraków and Katowice from Kraków.
  • Two days? Gdańsk, Wrocław, Hel — cities that reward walking.
  • Mountains? Zakopane is the simplest: the station is in the centre.
  • Book early for Friday afternoon and Sunday evening — that is when trains fill up.
