Winter in Polish cities — six destinations for December
Short days, light on cobblestones and cities that finally slow down. Six destinations for a December weekend — with rail access and no forced itinerary.
Winter in Poland is often an excuse not to go anywhere. But cities work differently in December: fewer crowds, shorter queues, more light in the streets. Here are six destinations with the most to offer this season — all reachable by train.
1. Wrocław — market and Ostrów Tumski
December Wrocław has two faces: the bustle of the Rynek and the quiet of Ostrów Tumski, where gas lamps are lit at dusk. This is a city that needs no plan — just walk and go through the gateways. From Warsaw 3:55, from Kraków 3:00.

2. Gdańsk — light over the Motława
In winter Gdańsk shows what summer hides: darkness in which light matters, and streets without crowds on weekdays. The market runs from 20 November to 23 December, with free entry. From Warsaw 2:25.

3. Kraków — the Main Square off-season
Kraków in December is crowded around the Rynek and empty two streets away. It is a good time for the museums you never had energy for in summer — and for the market in the evening. From Warsaw 2:40.
4. Toruń — a one-day city
December is the best time for Toruń: a short day forces you to choose, and everything is close. The Rynek, Copernicus House, the walls and gingerbread, which here is a regional product rather than a souvenir. From Warsaw 2:30, from Gdańsk 1:50.

5. Poznań — the longest market
The Poznań market opens on 14 November and closes on 20 December — covering the whole pre-Christmas period, without the days between the holidays. From Warsaw 2:35.

6. Kłodzko — fortress above the Nysa
If market cities are too much, Kłodzko works differently: a fortress, a Gothic bridge and lower expectations. A good option for the days between the holidays, when some attractions close and you still want to get away. By train from Wrocław.
What to expect
- Days are short. In mid-December the sun sets before 16:00 — plan sightseeing for the morning and early afternoon.
- Markets close early. Many stalls finish around 20:00–21:00, not at midnight.
- Accommodation prices rise around St Nicholas’ Day and New Year. The week between 10 and 20 December is quietest.
- Restaurants need booking at weekends — especially the smaller ones away from the main square.
- Museums have shorter hours in December and holiday closures. Check the venue before building a day around it.
