Weekend in Masuria — A 3-Day Plan
Masuria is the land of a thousand lakes — perfect for a slow weekend. Here is a 3-day plan to see the most beautiful corners of the region.
Masuria is the most lakeland region in Poland — over 2,000 lakes scattered among forests, villages, and small towns. A weekend in this region is a perfect way to reset. Here is a 3-day plan.
Day 1 — Giżycko and the Elbląg Canal
Start with Giżycko — the informal capital of Masuria, located between lakes Niegocin and Kisajno. It is worth seeing Boyen Fortress — a 19th-century Prussian fortress, and the Elbląg Canal — a unique technical monument in which ships glide over grass, not water.
In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Niegocin — the best way to feel the Masurian atmosphere. In the evening, have dinner at one of Giżycko's fish restaurants.
Day 2 — Mikołajki and Lake Śniardwy
In the morning, drive to Mikołajki — a charming town on Lake Mikołajskie. It is worth walking around the port and promenade, then taking a cruise on Lake Śniardwy — the largest lake in Poland. Its area is over 113 km².
In the afternoon, return to Mikołajki and go for a bike ride along the lake. The routes are well-marked, and the views take your breath away. In the evening — dinner at one of the local Masurian taverns.
Day 3 — Mrągowo and Piska Forest
The last day is a walk through Mrągowo — a picturesque town on Lake Czos. It is worth seeing the market square, the Evangelical church, and the Masurian Landscape Park, which covers fragments of the Piska Forest.
In the afternoon, take a walk through the Piska Forest — one of the largest forest complexes in Poland. In the evening, return home. If you have time, stop in Ryn — a picturesque town with a Teutonic castle.
Where to Sleep?
The best bases are Giżycko, Mikołajki, and Mrągowo — all have extensive accommodation and are well-connected. It is worth choosing a guesthouse or agritourism farm by the lake to be close to water and trails.
What to Eat?
Masurian cuisine is fish from the lakes, game, and mushrooms. It is worth trying smoked vendace, fish soup, kindziuk, and Olsztyn marzipan. In Giżycko and Mikołajki there are many fish restaurants.
Practical Tips
Masuria is a tourist region — in the summer season (July-August) the towns are crowded and prices are high. It is worth going off-season — in spring or autumn, when the region is calmer and cheaper. In summer, it is worth booking accommodation in advance.
