How to Travel in Poland Without a Car
Train, bus, bike — Poland is much better connected than it seems. A guide to traveling without a car.
Many people give up on traveling around Poland without a car because it seems impossible. Nothing could be further from the truth — Polish railways are experiencing a renaissance, and bus and bike connections are better than ever.
Rail — The Basis of Travel
PKP Intercity serves all major cities, and new trains (Pendolino, Flirt) are comfortable and fast. Tickets can be bought online at intercity.pl or via the app. It is worth booking in advance — prices rise with the popularity of the connection.
Regional railways (Polregio, Koleje Dolnośląskie, Koleje Małopolskie) serve smaller towns and regions. This is often the best way to reach smaller towns.
Bus — To Places Without Rail
To places without rail access, you can get there by bus. FlixBus and local carriers serve hundreds of routes. It is worth checking schedules at e-podroznik.pl — the largest bus connection search engine in Poland.
Bike — Best Friend in the Region
In many regions, a bike is the best means of transport. Rentals operate in every major city, and cycling routes — especially Green Velo, Velo Dunajec, Velo Baltica — are well-marked.
Many trains have bike carriages where you can transport a bike for a fee (usually 10–20 PLN). This is the perfect solution for longer routes.
Hitchhiking and BlaBlaCar
BlaBlaCar operates actively in Poland — the simplest way to get cheaply from point A to point B, especially in poorly connected regions. Hitchhiking is also popular, especially in the Bieszczady and Podlasie.
Summary
Traveling around Poland without a car is possible and increasingly easy. It requires some planning but in return gives freedom — you don't have to worry about parking, fuel, or tickets. You can sleep, read, look out the window.
