By Bike Around Poland — How to Plan Your First Multi-Day Trip

Green Velo, Velo Dunajec, Velo Baltica — Poland has more and more cycling routes. Find out how to plan your first multi-day cycling trip.

Poland has over 20,000 km of marked cycling routes — including several multi-day routes of European class. If you have never done a multi-day trip, here is how to start.

1. Choose a Route Suited to Your Level

For a first trip, don't choose Green Velo (2,000 km). Start with a shorter route — Velo Dunajec (240 km), Velo Baltica (300 km), the Great Greater Poland Loop (600 km). Three or four days on a bike is a good start.

2. Don't Plan Too Long Distances

With luggage, covering 60–80 km per day is a realistic goal. Don't plan 100 km per day — that will exhaust you after two days. Better to ride less, but with pleasure.

3. Book Accommodation in Advance

In season (June-August) many places are booked. Book accommodation earlier, especially in popular regions. It is worth choosing cyclist-friendly places — with safe bike parking.

4. Take Care of Your Bike

Before leaving, check the brakes, tires, and derailleurs. Take a repair kit (inner tubes, pump, multitool), first aid kit, and lighting. It is also worth saving the addresses of bike workshops on the route.

5. Pack Light

The rule: less is more. Take only what is essential: two shirts, trousers, a rain jacket, sunscreen, food for the road. Everything in panniers — a backpack is uncomfortable on longer routes.

6. Eat Locally and Drink Plenty

Stop at local bars, bakeries, inns. Eat what is local — it is part of the journey. Drink plenty of water — on a bike you lose more than you think.

7. Plan a Buffer Day

Always plan one buffer day. It may turn out that the route is harder than you thought, the weather turns bad, the bike breaks. A buffer will save your holiday.

8. Enjoy the Ride

This is the most important rule. A bike is not a race — it is a way of traveling. Stop at the views, talk to people, eat local delicacies. Slow travel by bike is the best way to truly get to know Poland.
