Four national parks that get too little attention
Poland has 23 national parks. Everyone knows Białowieża and the Tatras — but four of them deliver the same sense of wildness without the crowds: Słowiński, Narwiański, Wielkopolski and Ojcowski.
Polish national parks share a problem: the famous ones are besieged, while equally interesting ones are almost empty. Here are four worth putting on your list before they become fashionable.
Słowiński — dunes that move
Słowiński NP is the only place in Poland where dunes genuinely travel. Sand shifts with the wind, burying forest and exposing new landscapes — which is why trails are rerouted and the “Polish Sahara” looks different every few years.
Between the dunes lie lakes Łebsko and Gardno, with Rowokół hill above them — a viewpoint with medieval history.
Base: Słowiński National Park.
Narwiański — the Polish Amazon
Narwiański NP is called “the Polish Amazon” and it is no exaggeration: the Narew spreads here into a maze of channels, islands and reed beds. Best explored from a boardwalk with binoculars — this is a park of birds, not summits.
In spring and autumn migration the traffic is enormous. Summer is green and quiet.
Wielkopolski — lakes near Poznań
Wielkopolski NP lies close to Poznań, yet is not an obvious weekend target. It is a park of lakes and pine woods, with flat paths that work well for cycling and for walks with children.
There is also something few expect: silence like a park hundreds of kilometres from a city.
Ojcowski — smallest, and the most rocky
Ojcowski NP is the smallest national park in Poland and one of the easiest to reach — an hour from Kraków. It has Hercules’ Club, the Dark Cave and the castle at Pieskowa Skała, all on a scale you can cover in a day.
A good choice if you want to show someone a “real” national park without a mountain expedition.
Practical
For Słowiński take a train to Łeba or Smołdzino; for Ojcowski a train to Kraków and then a bus. Narwiański and Wielkopolski rather require a car. Entry is ticketed or free depending on the park — check before you go.
When to go
All four work all year, but the best months are May–September. Słowiński is the least predictable weather-wise — at the coast the wind changes everything within an hour.
