Notecka Primeval Forest — Expanses of Pine

Notecka Primeval Forest — travel photo 1

The Noteć region is a land of pine forests, lakes, and rivers. Noteć Forest, Warta, lakes. Slow travel through western Greater Poland.

Why it's worth it

The Noteć region is an area in western Poland, on the border of Greater Poland, Lubusz, and West Pomerania. This is a region known for one thing — pine forests. The Noteć Forest is one of the largest forest complexes in Poland (~1,300 km²), stretching between the Warta and Noteć rivers. The landscape is very uniform: pines, pines, and more pines, intersected by lakes and rivers. But it is precisely this uniformity that creates a unique atmosphere — it is quiet, fragrant, and calm here. Add to that lakes: Lake Bytyńskie, Lake Chrzypskie, Lake Wielkie — among the cleanest in Greater Poland.

Slow travel through the Noteć region is a journey through a landscape that requires patience. There are no mountains, no spectacular attractions — there are forests, lakes, and rivers. It is worth spending 2–3 days here to truly feel this landscape. The best way to explore the Noteć region is by bike or kayak — there are about 500 km of cycling trails, including the famous trail around the Noteć Forest. Public transport from Poznań and Gorzów is good (trains, buses).

What to see

The Noteć region is divided into three main parts: the Noteć Forest (centre), the Warta valley (south), and the lakes (north). Exploring the region takes 2–3 days.

Noteć Forest

  • Noteć Forest — an extensive complex of pine forests, one of the largest in Poland. Worth it for mushroom picking.
  • Wieleń village — a small town on the Noteć, with a castle and market square. Worth it for architecture.
  • Drawsko village — a village on a lake, with a wooden church. Worth it for the atmosphere.

Warta valley

  • Warta — the river, its valley is the most valuable element of the region. Worth it for a kayak trip.
  • Międzychód — a small town on the Warta, with a market square and church. Worth it for architecture.
  • Sieraków village — a small town on the Warta, with a castle and lakes. Worth it for architecture.

Lakes

  • Lake Bytyńskie — a ribbon lake, one of the cleanest in Greater Poland. Worth it for swimming.
  • Lake Chrzypskie — a lake with numerous bays, in the northern part of the region. Worth it for kayaking.
  • Lake Wielkie — a lake in the Noteć Forest, with crystal-clear water. Worth it for silence.

When to go

  • May and June — the best time for slow travel. Warm, green, few tourists.
  • July–August — lake and beach season. Worth it for swimming, but crowded at the lakes.
  • September–October — second best. Autumn colours, fewer people, mushroom picking in the forests.
  • November–March — the region is sleepy in winter, many attractions closed. Worth it for those seeking silence.

Getting there

  • By car: ~1 hour from Poznań (DK11), ~1 hour from Gorzów (DK22), ~2.5 hours from Berlin (A12).
  • By train: Wronki, Międzychód, Sieraków have railway stations, with connections from Poznań.
  • By bus: PKS serves most towns and villages.

The Noteć region is best explored by bike or car — the region is vast, and public transport between villages can be sparse. Leave the car at the car park in Wieleń or Sieraków.
